The most beloved wedding ceremony songs for you

The Number 1 – all across the nation – is “Canon in D” by Johan Pachelbel. A true classic with its gentle, flowing melody …

But there is more! A lot more…

2. “A Thousand Years” – Christina Perri

  • A modern ballad filled with emotion, often chosen for the processional or recessional.

3. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

  • This ukulele version brings a soft and whimsical touch to the ceremony.

4. “Ave Maria” – Franz Schubert or Beyoncé

  • A sacred classic or its modern rendition, ideal for traditional or religious ceremonies.

5. “Clair de Lune” – Claude Debussy

  • This elegant instrumental adds sophistication and serenity to any wedding.

6. “Marry Me” – Train

  • A contemporary and heartfelt song, often chosen for the processional.

7. “The Prayer” – Andrea Bocelli & Celine Dion

  • A powerful duet, perfect for a spiritual or emotional moment in the ceremony.

8. “Perfect” (Acoustic Version) – Ed Sheeran

  • Quiet and intimate, this version fits beautifully into a romantic ceremony.

9. “Air on the G String” – Johann Sebastian Bach

  • A graceful classical piece, ideal for setting a tranquil and timeless tone. You do not need the full organ version for this – it also sounds very beautiful played by a string quartet.

10. “This I Promise You” – NSYNC (Instrumental or Vocal)

  • A heartfelt promise of love, perfect for exchanging vows or as a prelude.

That should give you a lot to choose from! And if you are more leaning toward the grandiose, here are two more for you:

11. Richard Wagner, Wedding March

Here – the piano version… but if you feel so inclined, just have a whole chorus perform for you!

One more:

12. Jeremiah Clarke, Trumpet Voluntary or “Prince of Denmark March”

This truly befits the most royal of weddings – so go ahead and have yourselves celebrated!

A Meaningful Ceremony Ritual for YOU

Planning your wedding ceremony, you might be wondering how to make this core event of your wedding day personal to the two of you, and one of the most beautiful ways to do this is by incorporating a ritual that is meaningful to you – and that will be unforgettable to your guests.

Many of my couples opt for lighting a “unity candle” together – which is great for indoors (e.g. in a church), but can be tricky outdoors, as even a slight breeze might blow it out.

If your ceremony is taking place outdoors, you could alternatively blend sand as a symbol of your irreversible union…

… or blend wine, to express that same sentiment.

There are more options – you could plant a tree together, symbolizing your growing and thriving relationship…

… or you could, in a nostalgic twist, release doves…

…. or butterflies, to celebrate the occasion.

I hope this is giving you a few ideas for YOUR ceremony!

A Beloved German Christmas Tradition

In Germany, the land of Christmas markets and “Stille Nacht” (Silent Night), there is one Christmas tradition above all else – the “Christstollen”, or “Stollen” for short, a rich fruit-and-nut bread that is eaten ONLY at Christmas. It has to be baked weeks ahead of time for flavors to mature, and it is covered in a thick coating of butter and powdered sugar to seal in these flavors and moisture until “showtime.” Every region has their own twist on this classic, and many families have their own recipes, guarded and handed down over the generations.

After my dear Mom’s passing, it fell to me to bake the annual Stollen for our family, and we have always shared it with friends and neighbors, teachers and everyone else we wanted to make happy (meaning, I had to bake up to a dozen of them…).

Today, I’ll share my recipe with you – here it is! Happy baking!

Traditional German Christstollen

Ingredients:

500 g all-purpose flour

4 heaping teaspoons baking powder

200 g granulated sugar

A little salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 tablespoon dark rum

1 tablespoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon of cardamom powder

½ teaspoon of nutmeg

2 large eggs

175 g of unsalted sweet cream butter, softened

250 g of full-fat sour cream

125 g of dark raisins

250 g of golden raisins

50 g of candied lemon peel, finely chopped

150 g of ground almonds

For coating Stollen once baked:

50 g unsalted butter, melted

50 g (or more) powdered sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, spices and eggs, mix until incorporated. Mix in butter; do not overmix. Take out paddle and use wooden spoon to mix in remaining ingredients until incorporated. If dough is very sticky, add a little flour as needed, turn out on floured work surface.

Shape dough to a circle, roughly 40 cm in diameter and 4 cm thick. Fold over one side of the circle over the other, leaving about 4 cm of the lower half uncovered, then gently shape the dough into an elongated oval loaf with your hands (traditional Stollen shape).

Transfer Stollen to a cookie sheet covered with baking paper. Bake Stollen for ca. 50-60 minutes until a wooden toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean and the surface is light golden brown. If Stollen browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil for remaining baking time.

As soon as Stollen comes out of the oven, baste with 50 g liquid butter and sprinkle very generously with powdered sugar (use a sieve) – Stollen should look like covered with a thick layer of fresh snow. Let cool completely, then wrap in aluminum foil and let mature for 2-3 weeks, up to 4 weeks, before enjoying.

Alternatives to a classic bridal bouquet

Yes, we’ve seen them all: round, hand-tied, cascading style… and yes, many of these bouquets are beautiful. Looking for something ENTIRELY different? Here are a few ideas!

A veil lavishly adorned with fresh flowers – THAT will make an entrance!!

Especially for tropical-themed or summer weddings: a beautiful flower lei in lieu of a classic bouquet.

Or are you really fashion-forward? A purse made entirely from flowers would go great with a minimalistic dress or jumpsuit!

So….. what’s YOUR favorite?

Enhancing Guest Experience at Your Wedding with Thoughtful Gestures

Making your guests feel valued and welcome adds such a personal and memorable touch to the event. Small, thoughtful gestures can significantly enhance guest experience, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and appreciated.

Here are some ideas to consider:

1. Seasonal Comforts

For outdoor weddings, consider providing pashmina shawls or cozy blankets for chilly evenings. Display them in a charming basket with a sign that reads, “To have and to hold in case you get cold.” If it’s a summer wedding, hand out paper fans or parasols to help guests stay cool under the sun.

2. Dance Floor Flip-Flops

Walking in high heels or dress shoes for hours is a surefire recipe for blisters. How often have I heard the groan, “My feet are killing me…” Offer a basket of flip-flops in various sizes near the dance floor with a sign like, “Kick off your heels and dance the night away!” Your guests will be eternally grateful.

3. Refreshment Stations

Keep guests hydrated (and happy) with creative refreshment stations. Infused water bars, lemonade stands, or hot cocoa stations (for winter weddings) are both functional and fun. Add personalized cups or stirrers and personalized cocktail napkins for a custom touch.

4. Personalized Notes or Favors

Place handwritten thank-you notes or small tokens at each seat to show your appreciation. Ideas: Mini candles, personalized cookies, or seed packets – even a single flower, loose or in a bud vase, looks pretty.

5. Kids’ Entertainment

Keep younger guests engaged with activity packs, coloring books, or a small game area. This thoughtful gesture also gives their parents a chance to relax and enjoy the festivities.

6. Bathroom Baskets

Stock restrooms with essentials like mints, hair ties, stain remover wipes, travel-size deodorant sticks, band aids and pain relievers. These little conveniences can make a HUGE difference! Plus, guests won’t come running to YOU to ask for these things – it’s self-service!

These small gestures \ enhance the guest experience by showing your thoughtfulness and that you really care, making your wedding even more special and memorable for everyone. Like so often, it’s the little things that count, so if at all possible, “go that extra mile.”

Kids’ entertainment at weddings

Weddings bring together friends and family of all ages, including children. While the celebration is mainly for adults, long ceremonies and receptions can strain the attention spans and goodwill of little ones. Providing dedicated entertainment for children not only ensures their happiness but also allows parents to enjoy the festivities stress-free. Here are some creative and fun options for keeping kids entertained at weddings.

1. Activity Packs and play areas

Activity packs are a simple and budget-friendly way to keep children occupied. Fill personalized bags or boxes with coloring books, crayons, puzzles, and small toys. Include items like wedding-themed stickers or mini games to tie into the celebration. Set an area up with crafts, building blocks, or Play-Doh to encourage creativity. For older children, include board or card games and maybe a reading nook with age-appropriate books.

2. Outdoor Games

For outdoor weddings, consider lawn games like ring toss, giant Jenga, or mini golf. These activities encourage kids to play together and burn off energy (VERY important!!) in a safe and fun environment.

3. Professional Entertainers

Hiring professional entertainers, such as clowns, magicians, or balloon artists, is always a hit with children of all ages. Face painters and caricature artists are more fun options.

4. Interactive Experiences

Photo booths with props are not just for adults—kids love dressing up and striking poses too. Alternatives: a DIY cookie or cupcake decorating station can double as an activity and a sweet treat.

A wonderful experience for the youngest wedding guests is – a petting zoo! (If the venue allows it, of course…)

By incorporating child-appropriate entertainment options, you can create a wedding experience that delights children and keeps them busy and happy while ensuring a smooth and enjoyable celebration for everyone. Soo…. go ahead!

My favorite decoration tricks!

In short: plants, flowers and uplights! You might not realize how dramatically all of these can transform a room.

Have a look! Let’s start with an elegant dinner setup with minimal decor:

Now let’s add greenery to the room:

And now: let’s add some blooms and a touch of peach uplighting:

Now… are you convinced?! Let’s design together!

Dream Honeymoon Destinations: Mauritius, Bora Bora, Maldives, and Bali

Your honeymoon is a time to celebrate your union in a romantic, intimate setting. Among the most sought-after honeymoon destinations in the world are Mauritius, Bora Bora, the Maldives, and Bali. Each offers unique experiences, stunning landscapes, and luxurious accommodations to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Mauritius: A Tropical Paradise of Culture and Beauty

Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a haven of golden beaches, turquoise waters, and a melting pot of cultures. Known for its luxury resorts, warm hospitality, and diverse activities, this island is a top choice for couples seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Highlights

  • Beaches: The pristine sands of Belle Mare, Trou aux Biches, and Le Morne are perfect for lounging under the sun.
  • Water Activities: Snorkeling and diving in the coral reefs reveal vibrant marine life, while catamaran cruises offer breathtaking views of the coastline.
  • Nature and Adventure: Explore the lush Black River Gorges National Park or take a hike to the Chamarel Waterfall. The Seven Colored Earths, a geological phenomenon, is a must-see. I also recommend a helicopter tour of the island – it is stunning!
  • Cultural Experiences: Visit the bustling markets of Port Louis, buy exotic spices by the pound and savor Mauritian cuisine, a blend of Creole, Indian, Chinese, and European flavors.

Bora Bora: A Romantic Lagoon Escape

Nestled in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is synonymous with romance. Its turquoise lagoon, luxurious overwater bungalows, and iconic volcanic peaks make it one of the most enchanting honeymoon destinations in the world. Be aware that the language spoken is French – and that it is highly appreciated if you at least TRY to speak a few words of French before falling back into English. Merchants will give you a discount for your efforts!

Highlights

  • Overwater Bungalows: Imagine waking up to the sound of gentle waves and stepping directly into the lagoon from your private villa.
  • The Lagoon: Spend your days snorkeling or scuba diving to witness a kaleidoscope of fish and coral, or paddleboard over crystal-clear waters.
  • Mount Otemanu: Take a guided hike or helicopter tour to see this majestic peak and enjoy panoramic views of the island.
  • Romantic Activities: Enjoy private lagoon cruises, beachside picnics, or sunset dinners on a secluded motu (islet).

Maldives: A Collection of Idyllic Islands

The Maldives, a chain of nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean, is famous for its powdery white beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant underwater world. This destination is the ultimate retreat for couples seeking privacy and luxury. Many of its myriad islands are so tiny that you can walk around them in 20 minutes to an hour. Be aware that daytime temperatures are so high that the sand on the beaches gets burning hot!

Highlights

  • Private Islands: Many resorts occupy their own (tiny) island, ensuring an intimate and exclusive experience.
  • Underwater Wonders: Snorkel or dive to discover vibrant coral reefs, manta rays, and whale sharks. Some resorts even offer underwater dining experiences.
  • Overwater Villas: Relax in opulent accommodations that often feature private infinity pools, glass floors to view the marine life below, and direct access to the ocean.
  • Water Activities: Enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, or catamaran sailing, snorkeling, Scuba diving and underwater photography; or simply float in the tranquil waters.

Bali: A Romantic Cultural Haven

Known as the “Island of the Gods,” Bali offers a unique combination of natural beauty, spiritual experiences, and vibrant culture. Its stunning beaches, verdant rice terraces, and tranquil temples make it an ideal honeymoon destination.

Highlights

  • Beaches: From the lively shores of Seminyak to the secluded coves of Nusa Dua, Bali’s beaches cater to every taste.
  • Cultural Experiences: Explore the sacred Uluwatu Temple or witness traditional Balinese dance performances. Visit the artistic town of Ubud for its galleries and artisan markets. Ubud is especially famous for its handmade silver jewelry.
  • Nature and Adventure: Trek to Mount Batur for a sunrise hike or stroll through the iconic Tegalalang Rice Terraces; enjoy jungle swings and hidden waterfalls.
  • Luxury and Wellness: Bali is renowned for its wellness retreats and luxurious resorts, offering couples’ massages, yoga sessions, and private pool villas.

Choosing the Right Destination

Each of these destinations offers a unique honeymoon experience:

  • Mauritius is ideal for couples who want a balance of beach relaxation and cultural exploration.
  • Bora Bora and the Maldives are perfect for those seeking luxury, privacy, and the ultimate romantic escape.
  • Bali offers a mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation for couples looking for diversity.

Final tips for planning your honeymoon:

Set a budget, book early and consider the Season and local weather conditions. Research visa and vaccination requirements well ahead of time, and polish your language skills!

A Guide to Appropriate Attire for the Mother of the Bride, Mother of the Groom, Father of the Bride, and Father of the Groom

As core members of the wedding party, the parents of the bride and groom play a crucial role in setting the tone for the event. Their attire should reflect the formality, style, and cultural traditions of the wedding.

Parents should communicate with the couple to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding style, formality, and color schemes. Consider the wedding location (e.g., a beach wedding calls for lighter fabrics, while a winter event may require heavier materials) and the time of year when choosing attire. Start shopping early to allow time for fittings or alterations. Weddings are long events, so ensure that your outfit is comfortable for extended wear. This includes choosing shoes that are stylish yet practical for walking, standing, and dancing.

If the wedding includes specific cultural or religious customs that influence attire, be sure to honor these traditions.

Our guide offers practical advice and tips to help parents of the bride and groom choose attire that honors the occasion while allowing them to look and feel their best.

Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom

The Mother of the Bride (MoB) traditionally plays a central role in the wedding and is often one of the most visible figures throughout the event. Her attire should strike a balance between elegance, alignment with the wedding theme, and personal comfort. The Mother of the Groom (MoG) should choose her outfit to complement the MoB’s.

1. Coordinate with the Wedding Theme

  • Formal Wedding: For black-tie weddings, floor-length gowns in luxurious fabrics such as silk or velvet are ideal. Subtle embellishments like lace or beadwork can add sophistication.
  • Semi-Formal Wedding: Knee-length or tea-length dresses in elegant fabrics like chiffon or crepe work well for less formal settings.
  • Casual Wedding: A chic cocktail dress or a tailored pantsuit in soft or pastel tones fits more relaxed environments, such as a beach or garden wedding.

2. Color Choices

  • The MoB’s and MoG’s dresses should complement, not clash with, the wedding palette. Common choices include neutral tones like champagne, blush, navy, or pastel shades that pair well with the bridesmaids’ dresses.
  • Avoid White and Ivory as these might compete with the bride’s wedding dress (and remember: nobody outshines the bride!!), and this is also not an occasion for loud colors and patterns.

3. Comfort and Style

  • Choose an outfit that is comfortable enough to wear for the entire day, from the ceremony to the reception. Consider the season, wedding venue, and any cultural or religious expectations.

Father of the Bride and Father of the Groom

The Father of the Bride (FoB) often has a prominent role in the wedding, traditionally walking the bride down the aisle and giving a speech at the reception. His attire should reflect the formality of the wedding and coordinate with the groom’s outfit. The same holds true for the Father of the Groom (FoG).

1. Formal Weddings

  • Black Tie: A classic black tuxedo with a bow tie is a timeless choice. Consider a cummerbund or vest for added elegance.

2. Semi-Formal and Casual Weddings

  • Suit: A well-fitted fine-wool or wool/silk suit in navy, charcoal, or gray is a versatile option. Pair it with a coordinating tie or pocket square that matches the wedding colors.
  • Light-colored suits in linen or cotton work well for relaxed summer weddings (with a dress shirt and patterned necktie for semi-formal and an open-collared shirt for casual weddings), while darker hues in heavier fabrics are better for fall and winter events.

3. Accessories

  • Always wear elegant shoes that are appropriate for the venue (dress shoes for indoor settings, upscale loafers for beach weddings – sneakers are NEVER appropriate!).
  • Cufflinks, elegant wristwatches, and boutonnieres add a touch of sophistication without overpowering the overall look.

In short:

The attire of the Mother of the Bride, Mother of the Groom, Father of the Bride, and Father of the Groom plays an integral role in the overall aesthetic of the wedding. By coordinating with the couple, planning ahead, and considering the formality and style of the wedding, parents can ensure they look their best while honoring the significance of the day. Choose attire that allows you to feel confident, comfortable, and ready to celebrate this joyous occasion.

Otherworldly illusion cakes

With fondant coverings, even illusion wedding cakes are possible – the first one a suitcase (referencing the couple’s love of travel, complete with destination stickers) topped with a stack of hyperrealistic books (the bride and groom are mathematicians – they choose the titles of their favorite math books). The second cake mimics a stack of Tiffany boxes, with one REAL Tiffany jewelry box integrated into the design. This cake had to be guarded till showtime!
