Diahann and Brent – Urban Elegance for a Wedding with Friends and Family

When Diahann and Brent first met, they embarked on a true whirlwind romance. Says Diahann, “That first kiss changed my life; a kiss I will surely never forget.” And Brent was so overwhelmed that instead of devising elaborate plans for the perfect proposal, just did it at his first visit to meet her family. Talk of being carried away… Getting married was the natural next step for them, but – super-busy professional people that they both are – the execution of that plan wasn’t quite as easy. “The day doesn’t have enough hours to get it all done,” was what I heard from Diahann all the time while I was planning with her and for her. The two wanted an elegant, urban, and distinctive setting for their Great Day, and they found it in the hip Le Meridien Hotel in  San Francisco’s Financial District.

Stark modern architecture in clean lines forms an impressive framework in front of million-dollar-views of downtown San Francisco. For their wedding, the two “headquartered” in the Penthouse Suite, perched on the 24th floor with floor-to-ceiling windows,

and Diahann’s family, after a long trip from various East Coast locations, enjoyed the luxury of the Meridien as well. Speaking of family: that is perhaps one of the most striking aspects of this beautiful couple – their closeness to their family members and best friends, the warmth that surrounds them. So, all urban elegance aside, this was as much a celebration of family and friendship as a fancy party.

Indulge-D&B-6

How to bring both together? Diahann had ideas, and together we made them a reality! The ceremony was held on the second floor of the Meridien, decked out with flowers, an arch, and blue-shining carved lanterns on stanchions along an aisle sprinkled with white and blue petals. The silver shimmer of the elegant chiavari chairs brought in the third element of Diahann’s wedding colors: white, blue and silver.Indulge-D&B-8 resizedAn arch decorated with arrangements of white hydrangea, white orchids, fragrant white Stargazer lilies and ivy, accentuated with blue iris was the stunning focal point for the ceremony officiated by Rev. Kathy Wilkerson of Heartfelt Weddings.

The bride – radiant in a Vera Wang dress and lace-edged veil,  walked in on her father’s arm to the sounds of Schubert’s Ave Maria, performed by the Garden Strings Trio. The bridesmaids all wore cobalt blue dresses of varying style, and the groom and groomsmen were outfitted with matching neckties and pocket squares. The bridal bouquet and bridesmaids’ bouquets rounded out the unified look –

Following their “I Do’s,” the new “Mr. and Mrs.” danced down the aisle, followed by the whole bridal party, also dancing – and that joy would set the mood for the rest of the evening! And every moment was recorded on photo and video by Indulge Studios.

For them, it was now “photo time”…
The stark architecture of the Meridien Hotel formed an expressive backdrop for Indulge Photography’s staged group photos…Indulge-D&B-14

… but eventually the couple needed just a quiet moment to themselves!SONY DSC
And then, after cocktail hour on the patio, guests enjoyed a lavish dinner in the Park Grille Restaurant,

all glowing in blue from the sparkling centerpieces that the bride had envisioned and I had put together – dripping crystal chandeliers over tall glass cylinders adorned with sequined cuffs and filled with blue fairy lights: just have a look for yourself: centerpiece cropped

And then: the cake! A little masterpiece by Katrina Rozelle, the cake design artfully complemented the bride’s stunning dress, from bodice to ruffled skirt, and even displayed the groom’s attire, right down to his blue necktie! cake 2 Then it was time for the couple’s First Dance – and they kept on dancing to DJ Steve Perry’s music long after the last guests had left, just the two of them… and Steve kept playing for them until their Last Dance: “Unforgettable…”

Ceremony Soiree: Pure Wedding Ingenuity!

Elegant, fashionable, glossy Ceremony Magazine invited to their annual SF party 2013 – and “tout le (wedding) monde” showed up – that is: the lucky ones who received one of the coveted invitations. And yes, I was lucky!! Definitely an occasion not to be missed AND one to dress up – and off I went for a fun-filled evening of meeting longtime colleagues, making new friends and a ton of exciting discoveries.

What I mean by “discoveries?” Just wait. Amy Harrick, publisher and editor-in-chief of Ceremony Magazine (and just as stylish and beautiful herself as if she’d stepped out of the pages of her latest issue!)…

Amy Harrick

… had again outdone herself in attracting a crew of wonderful vendors.

To start with: an urban winery! Although I’d lived in SF for more than a decade… I have to admit I didn’t know it. So: Refer to invitation – First point on tonight’s agenda: DISCOVER A CLEVER NEW WEDDING SPACE. “Dogpatch Wine Works” offers the full winery experience (well, minus the vineyards outside) – complete with stacks of beautiful wine barrels:

And of course you can taste their wines – mmhhh!

But – what would a good wine be without equally good food to accompany it? Moot point, of course. Agenda point no. 2: SAVOR MASTERFUL FOOD AND DRINK! Indeed – Michi Catering and Global Gourmet Catering took care of that, perfectly.

Michi’s surprised again with their modern interpretation of classic Asian fare…

michi… and Global Gourmet served a selection of colorful plates:

Global Gourmet‘C’est Delectable’ rounded it out with authentic French macaroons (plus additional flavor infusion from a dropper, if desired!), luscious chocolates and to-die-for parfaits…

SweetsAnd for those who absolutely couldn’t get enough sweets, there even was a beautiful Ceremony Candy Bar:

Candy Bar 2But of course the evening was not all about food and drink – refer to program: BEHOLD INNOVATIVE FLORAL DESIGNS!

Right – from Michael Daigian‘s trademark lush arrangements in vibrant colors…

Daigian…and Very Merry tablescapes in white and green under dramatic metalweave orbs …

Very Merry 2…to Nicole Ha‘s innovative aisle decor:

Nicole Ha design…and some “Gorgeous Greens!”

Gorgeous and greenAnd amidst all that beauty and luxury, we checked off our last agenda items: CONNECT WITH THE BAY AREA’S MOST BRILLIANT WEDDING VENDORS! Yes, indeed – and it was such a pleasure catching up with so many of my dear colleagues all of whom had made an effort to attend: Linda Hylen of Julia Morgan Ballroom, Sharon Dexmier – whose Napa Valley Linens Company had sponsored all the gorgeous linens – and Diana Cardenas, photographer Kevin Chin and his wife, florist extraordinaire Nancy Liu Chin… and so many others! My dear friend Christine Cater of Christine Cater Floral and Event Design had even come all the way from Carmel to… ENJOY AN EXCEPTIONAL 3RD ANNUAL CEREMONY SOIREE. Last point on the agenda: check!

We had so much fun – it was such a wonderful evening – thanks, Amy Harrick and Ceremony Magazine!

ACPWC Napa Spring Tour – What a Day!

As my faithful readers know, I graduated from ACPWC (Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants) and also earned my “Professional Wedding Consultant” title there – my solid foundation for my work as a wedding planner and designer, my starting point and everyday resource. I loved that school! But ACPWC is way more than only a school – it’s a nationwide professional organization for wedding industry professionals with a continuing education program for members. Part of that are organized  site and venue visits. And here we are: the Spring Tour this year – a whole day of wedding venue visits – went to the SF Wine Country. To Napa Valley, to be exact; membership chair Angie Mack had again outdone herself in putting all that together! Deborah Moody, our tireless Executive Director, came with us, and Social Media Chair Miranda Meisenbach recorded and posted right away what we ladies were up to during the day.

And here we go: starting point was the Springhill Suites Marriott Napa Valley hotel, where we were not only treated to a tour of the property, but to breakfast and a Welcome Bag as well!

It’s a newer property offering the Wine Country Wedding experience at a moderate price point, but with everything one expects from a Wine Country getaway – pool and fitness center, 100 all-suite guest rooms, ball rooms and a tent for weddings up to 250 guests, as well as a ceremony lawn where a Tuscan-style setting is a beautiful backdrop for a wedding ceremony.

OR – the ceremony could be held at the quaint St. Joan of Arc Cathedral Church in nearby Yountville…

It has retained the simple charm of a little village church “that Time forgot…”

Another unexpected discovery was to follow right away: stylish North Block hotel in Yountville. Never heard of it? Me neither… it’s got a new owner, a new name, and a beautiful new makeover and concept for weddings!

With the nostalgic appeal of a Mediterranean village, a central plaza where the onsite restaurant puts out tables and chairs and where brides can say their vows at the antique fountain on the plaza, the 20-room luxury boutique hotel is a total secret even to wedding industry insiders. A beautiful pool was beckoning … (as you can see, it was the perfect hot summer day in the Wine Country!)

… and the hotel’s Redd Wood restaurant looked just as inviting, with lots of French bistro character and unique design touches:

North Block is, by the way, dog-friendly for ceremony and outside cocktail hour, so bring your furry friend, as ring bearer or as witness to your nuptials! North Block also offers a unique approach to planning an intimate Wine Country Wedding – a hotel buyout. Just imagine to have the whole little “village” to yourselves and your closest friends and family who’d occupy the guest rooms; you could be married right there on the plaza, have your cocktail hour there and dine in that wonderfully nostalgic “pizzeria” (where the chef will customize your gourmet menu – don’t be fooled by the “pizzeria” sign in the window!!) – and then you can dance under the stars. North Block can accommodate weddings of ca. 50 guests – so, small affairs only – but that they do in high style!

After lunch at Pacific Blues Cafe on the Yountville “town square,” we went to visit the Domaine Chandon winery where exquisite “bubblies” are produced in the French method, “methode Champenoise.” Go and try the finished product – it’s delicious!

The Champagne develops in huge barrels – or rather, tanks! – it’s really impressive:

… and then you can sit back in the ultramodern tasting room and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy…

… which we did, later! First we toured the beautiful property which is extremely sought-after for elegant weddings. Small wonder…

… especially since only six (SIX!!) can be held there per year! But just look at the possibilities:

Shaded lawns with views of the valley, intimate patios and grottos, a dining room (Etoile, a true star – of the Michelin variety, no less!) in a streamlined modern design – Chandon can accommodate elegant weddings from 12 to 120. A dream! And then we wrapped up with their rosé Champagne on the patio. We could have just stayed there for the rest of the day…

… but more site visits were awaiting! Next stop: the combined property of Vintage Estate (super dog-friendly!!) and Villagio Inn and Spa –  another Italian/French fantasy with more than 200 beautiful guest rooms, flowing waterways, palm trees and blooming flowers everywhere.

It’s a whole little Mediterranean town in itself with restaurants, pools, and a world-class spa… and what’s even more, the “old” spa building was converted into a get-ready house for the bridal party, with a sitting room, mani/pedi/hair/make-up room, its own steam sauna and pool AND its own kitchen! Can be rented for the whole wedding day… simply fabulous! Ceremonies for small parties as well as for large weddings can be accommodated on site…

… followed by cocktails, dining and dancing – under the stars or in the rustic-nostalgic “Barrel Room” until two in the morning…

Make it a whole destination wedding weekend for yourselves and for your guests – so much to do! There is a golf course, tennis courts, pools, the spa and the restaurants, the quaint little town of Yountville and the beauty of the Wine Country beyond. It’ll be unforgettable for everyone!

Last visit of the day was to Black Stallion Winery on the world-famous Silverado Trail:

Situated on the grounds of an old equestrian estate, Black Stallion Winery offers a spectacular setting for a California Wine Country Wedding experience. Terraces and patios and several indoor spaces – including the historic Barrel Room – lend themselves to flights of wedding design fancy, blooming, romantic, rustic, nostalgic – as you like it!

Not even to mention Black Stallion’s world-class wines to accompany any meal… your guests will be in Bacchus’ Heaven! (as were we ourselves, after all that delicious wine tasting…)

With that, our excursion concluded – we were all so full of new impressions, exciting (wedding) possibilities, so exhausted and so happy! What an incredible tour!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something GREEN!

When Pantone announced the color of the year 2013, I got all excited, and inspired!

“PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald: Lively. Radiant. Lush… A color of elegance and beauty  that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony,” read the official introduction.

I began brainstorming immediately. How would the new “color of the year” star in a stylish wedding? With sparkling emeralds, of course – but also in so many more creative ways! I decided to plan a styled photo shoot together with my friend, photographer Majesta Patterson, and we would showcase green in all its glory, in all its different hues and styles, from pastel mint to deepest teal, from spring green to olive, from sheer luxury to earthy elegance. And so our inspiration shoot began to take shape. We found a gorgeous model (Aryan, with delicate features and raven-black hair, enhanced by Beauty by Cherise) and photographed her in a sun-dappled park,

a green orchid in her updo,  showcasing an elegant green bridal bouquet by Natasha Kolenko:

Photo: Majesta Patterson

On her sweetheart table, a graceful arrangement of Natasha’s green flowers complemented a luxurious wedding cake by Cake Coquette, decorated with green sugar gems, and served on antique white-and-green china…

… and in no time we got completely carried away with our vision in glorious green!

We caught our bride playfully noshing green candy from a mini candy bar – arranged in cut-crystal glasses on a silver tray full of sparkling glass gems.

Then she arranged a rustic-elegant green centerpiece for a simple meal on a weathered garden table, a dreamy setting for an intimate tete-a-tete or a romantic Rehearsal Dinner.

In the afternoon, it was time for our bride to select jewelry for her Great Day: real Colombian emeralds, cut to brilliant perfection and set as a ring, pendant, and earrings:

Georgie at Gleim Jewelers pre-selected for Aryan her most luxurious pieces of jewelry to try on and to truly feel like a princess!  We all could have spent hours in this treasure trove of precious gemstones, diamonds, gold and platinum…

Aryan concluded her day of bridal preparations with a visit to Nouvelle Vogue Bridal Salon, where owners Chantal and Saida are presiding over a hand-picked collection of the most exquisite wedding dresses – a one-shoulder silk-crepe dream by Kevin Gao, in perfect simplicity;

and one-of-a-kind dresses by Francesca Miranda, short and sweet for the bride …

… or elegant and luxurious for the mothers in a light green silk embroidered with beads:

From boxes and boxes of wedding shoes, our bride chose the perfect green strappy sandals to go with her favorite dresses for a graceful walk down the aisle, and for dancing the night away afterwards…

It was the perfect day for a bride-to-be, with something old, something new, something borrowed – and many things green, gloriously green!

Great Gatsby Bachelorette Bash

Inspired by this season’s fascinating Great Gatsby movie remake, I created an elegant bachelorette party in Great Gatsby style – complete with professional hair and makeup in the style of the period, typical flapper dresses and jewelry, a historic venue, Jazz and Charleston… everything to transport revelers into bygone times – unabashed glamour, wild dancing, retro chic!

Our venue was the former printing plant of the Hearst newspaper empire, now transformed into a hip urban event space, slightly gritty with lots of character:

The “Roaring Twenties” live at The Box SF – SF Bay Area Wedding Pro’s Party

In anticipation of the much-awaited new “Great Gatsby” movie, the San Francisco Bay Area Wedding Planners group took things in their own hands and celebrated the “Roaring Twenties” at The Box SF, a historic event space with a lot of character – it’s the former printing plant of William Randolph Hearst’s newspaper empire! With lots of period detail and a touch of gritty charm it proved to be the perfect venue for the occasion.

More than a dozen group members and some newcomers had generously contributed to the party, making it into a truly memorable event, starting with a custom-designed logo, signage and fliers by Rachel Lopez Metzger of  The Desk Set.

Our models from Stars Model Agency – Gabrielle, Kris, Jillian, Katrina and Victoria – received glamorous hair-do’s and makeup by the Bella Bridal team (Jocelyn and Brenda)

in an elegant get-ready room at the Westin St. Francis hotel, courtesy of Wedding Specialist Lauren Schardt, while our photographers – husband-and-wife team rc & tess and Martin Meyer of martinFILMS captured every moment.

Guests found the space transformed with dramatic decor: elegant lounge furniture from Abbey’s Party Rentals, courtesy of Mike Seramin; glittering and sparkling linens from Sharon Dexmier’s company, Napa Valley Linens; and over-the-top glamorous centerpieces – white calla lilies, ostrich feathers, crystals and pearls – imagine! – from Jaime and Fred of SullivanBotello Events.

Tonic Beverage Catering hosted an open bar including champagne, putting guests in a festive mood, and Robbie Schlosser and his Magnolia Jazz Band enveloped the whole gathering in beautiful sound.

Revelers enjoyed tasty finger food alongside their champagne: a variety of classic tea sandwiches from Maureen Kelly at Knight’s Catering and authentic Indian specialties from Ranjan Dey’s New Delhi Restaurant.

Dessert? Of course! A stunning cake decorated with the custom logo of the evening, another little masterpiece by Alison Okabayashi from Pretty Please.

And then guests discovered what was originally meant as favors “on the way out:” cake pops by Lauren Martin of Sweet Lauren Cakes, artfully  decorated with Art Deco patterns in the colors of the party – black, gold, and ivory; little gems that proved simply irresistible! They were so good that practically none were left at the end of the evening…

The undisputed highlight of the party was a carefully guarded surprise: acclaimed entertainer, choreographer and dance instructor Cynthia Glinka led guests in Charleston dance steps, accompanied by Magnolia Jazz Band – and with her sheer energy and contagious enthusiasm got the crowd moving to the beat! Everyone loved it, and everyone left with a big smile…

Till next time!

“Inspire/Imagine/Ignite” – Hartmann’s Gorgeous Customer Party

I feel lucky. I got invited to an incredible party – Hartmann Studio‘s customer appreciation party, tonight, at Fort Mason Center in SF. And I can tell you: with THAT party, I as a customer do feel appreciated! Hartmann Studios, one of the leading rental companies, and Impact Lighting, their sister company for all things “lighting,” pulled off a glorious show with what they do best, and they did it to perfection: Hartmann transformed the Festival Pavilion into a series of exciting event spaces, and Impact lit up the entrance – and the sky! But of that later.

Hartmann Studios had invited dozens of caterers and florists to elevate their furnished, draped and lighted event spaces to a living, breathing, inspiring party experience.

So many discoveries to be made, so many beautiful surprises! What caught my eye first were the gorgeous floral designs – Nancy Liu Chin‘s totally over-the-top glamorous, gold-and-black table installation complete with black chandeliers to start with.

Then there were the dramatic supersized trophy vase arrangements by Hunt Littlefield

and a surreal vignette by Spiral Hand Floral and Event Design.

Asiel had come up with a light show behind a chain curtain as a backdrop to a futuristic arrangement;

Nicole Ha Designs got inspired by Alice in Wonderland,

Montbretia shone with a more traditonal, beautifully composed arrangement,

and Mandy Scott showed a spring-inspired design in hues of yellow and  green that was at once utterly beautiful, fresh, elegant and optimistic!

Having feasted my eyes on all these beautiful designs, I had to try the food as well – 17 catering companies offered delicious bites; impossible to sample them all! Therefore, the selection here is highly incomplete… but nevertheless: here are my personal highlights: Taste Catering, Wolfgang Puck and Melons – gold standards in the area; and my personal discoveries: Thomas John Events with a breathtakingly beautiful presentation of, among other things, beet and goat cheese bites with edible flowers,

and, for dessert, Tout Sweet, with super-rich dark chocolate pastries of heavenly intensity and texture, passionfruit tartlets, macaroons and sandwich cookies… to die for!

I sampled until literally I could eat no more… what a feast! But it was not over yet! Stepping out on their way home, guests were greeted by a celestial light show of sorts – serious competition for Aurora borealis.

That’s what I call a party – one that, in fact, was inspiring, full of imagination, and delivered the promised “ignition!!”

Art and Fun, Food and Wine: Peggy’s and Jose’s Wedding

Peggy and Jose had taken their time with an extended courtship,

… and when they decided to get married, they knew exactly how they wanted to celebrate: nothing formal or stuffy – but a joyous party with friends and family, good food and wine, music and dance… and a very personal touch! Peggy, a High School art teacher, immediately jumped in design mode, and I was lucky enough to be included from the get-go. Together we created a unified design concept, and Peggy the artist literally created and crafted all aspects of the decor elements, starting with the invitations:

Once the venue had been chosen – a charming historic structure under mature trees…

… Peggy decided on her wedding colors: soft blues, greens and turquoise sea glass hues to complement her favorite “flowers”  – succulents! And as Peggy is not only artistic but also super organized (a rare combination of talents!), she started a veritable succulent farm in her garden six months ahead of time. She made her bouquet and matching boutonnieres for the gentlemen herself, and she hand-dyed neckties and scarves in sea glass colors for her bridal party.

The aisle was strewn with green and turquoise silk petals, and I came up with a floating canopy as a ceremony backdrop, held up by helium-filled balloons in – of course! – seaglass colors.

The ceremony was captured on film by Tony Nguyen of Portraits by Tony and Thomas Dowrie of Video Impressions

… with this highlight: “You may now kiss your bride!”

And here they are, Just Married! Singing and dancing to the Beatles tune, “When I’m Sixty-Four,”  with their dog Lucky…

… and off to the official wedding photos by Portraits by Tony!

Guests meanwhile enjoyed a cocktail hour with appetizers, wine and beer from Mark Stahlnecker‘s bar, and music by DJ Peter Haley of the Spinheads who kept the crowd entertained throughout dinner and beyond.

Tables were decorated with hand-stitched blue-green moire ribbons, succulent centerpieces from Peggy’s own nursery, planted in bowls thrown and glazed – by Peggy, of course!

As a nod to the groom’s heritage, an authentic Mexican dinner was provided by Mexican Taco Party to the sounds of Buena Vista Social Club – and then a wild dance party ensued! Guests only took a break to applaud the newlyweds cutting their supersize cupcake by Sibby’s Cupcakery (sitting on a stand painted turquoise by, you guessed it, the bride herself!).

Afterward the couple enjoyed their First Dance…

… followed by the Father-Daughter dance…

… and a glorious Grand Exit with supersize sparklers!

Guests took home their champagne flutes as favors, with a little thank-you card (mimicking the save-the-dates) tied on with personalized ribbon.

Cheers and best wishes, Peggy and Jose!

A Mediterranean-Style Summer Party

A historic Mediterranean Estate surrounded by lush gardens and a manicured park was the scene of an elegant late-summer party, complete with lunch on the patio, hand-calligraphed menu cards, a one-of-a-kind vintage Packard limousine, and even a harpist.

What could be a more beautiful setting for a leisurely late-summer lunch party than a historic country estate in a park? That’s why I chose the famed Villa Montalvo in Saratoga as the venue for a festive luncheon – with cocktails in the enclosed courtyard centered around antique fountains….
